Directions to Our Practice
If you’ve never been to our practice before, here are two easy routes you could take, starting from two of the libraries within a few minutes’ drive from us:
- Starting from the Balboa Branch Library, take Mt Abernathy Ave south, then turn right onto Balboa Ave. Follow that west until after you pass the high school. Turn right onto Balboa Terrace, then turn left onto Monair Dr. We’re on the east end of the second long building, at 3737 Moraga Ave b109.
- If you’re closer to the North Clairemont Branch Library, take Clairemont Dr south, then turn right onto Balboa Ave, and the rest of the directions are the same as the first set.
How Much Local History Do You Know?
In 1950, visionary developers Carlos Tavares and Lou Burgener created what would become San Diego’s largest post-war subdivision, originally known as “The Village Within a City.” Named after Tavares’s wife Claire, this innovative community welcomed its first residents in May 1951 and represented a revolutionary approach to suburban living that departed from traditional grid-pattern neighborhoods.
The developers thoughtfully designed Clairemont with winding streets and scenic view lots that took advantage of the area’s natural canyons and bluffs overlooking Mission Bay. Rather than uniform blocks, the community featured highly customized floor plans and capitalized on the beautiful topography that makes Clairemont so distinctive today. The original subdivision was assembled from three primary land holdings: the Peavey Cattle Ranch, Mission Bay Heights, and Tecolote Heights.
What made Clairemont truly groundbreaking was its comprehensive planning approach. Since the development was removed from San Diego’s city center, Tavares and Burgener invested heavily in infrastructure and designed the community to be self-sufficient, incorporating commercial businesses, retail shopping, schools, libraries, and other essential amenities directly into the master plan.
Between 1952 and 1954, an impressive seven homes were constructed daily, making Clairemont the largest development of its kind in the country. This innovative suburban model would go on to influence San Diego’s growth pattern for decades to come, establishing Clairemont as a pioneering community that successfully balanced residential living with convenient access to modern amenities.
